Welcome to our long routes section! We live in a spectacular area where big link ups are common but can be very committing. Plan ahead and have a great run!
Burma Road Loop
Start and Finish: Anywhere on the loop, this description begins at Aviemore Railway Station
Distance: 40km
Strava Route
Starting from Aviemore, this loop takes in the classic hill climb of the Burma Road before descending down to the River Dulnain and back to Carrbridge, joining the Speyside Way at Boat of Garten to return to Aviemore. It is possible to return to Aviemore by taking a route that stays west of Carrbridge and returns through High Burnside to Aviemore. This is a slightly shorter loop but still offers great running on brilliant trails. Another alternative would be to end your run (if you time it right) at the Carrbridge Railway Station and return to Aviemore by train. This would give you a point to point run of around 25km.
Loch Laggan - Corrour
Start: Loch Laggan Layby
Finish: Corrour Railway Station
Distance: 25km
OS Map Route
Will take a bit of logistics to get timings for trains, car shares and cafe opening right but well worth the effort! If following the route mapped out here, recommend going as a pair or group in multiple cars as you’ll need to get from Tulloch Station back to the run start point. There is always the option to turn back at Corrour but most club members tend to run out, enjoy a spot of lunch / cake, train back.
Starting at the end of Loch Laggan, cross the bridge over River Spean, as the track splits, stick to the right hand side, heading towards Luiblea. Head up the hill into the trees… It’s a long gentle climb on a good track. The track is pretty much obvious from that point onwards and is signposted. When you come to a fork in the track, take the left fork away from the reservoir heading down towards Loch Ghuilbinn. Stick to the main track as you look down at River Ossian.
At the Corrour shooting lodge keep right, with Loch Ossian on your left. The views may mean stopping a few times for capturing the memories ????. Undulating track from here till you reach the very popular Corrour Station cafe and the train back to Tulloch.
Lairig Ghru
Start: Linn of Dee Car Park
Finish: Inverdruie
Distance: 30km
Strava Route
The classic route through one of the nations best known mountain passes. This route is best run from Deeside to Speyside although this Walkhighlands route descriptor gives an excellent walkthrough in the opposite direction. The logistics on this one can be a little heavy, often requiring either a long drive back with a partner to collect a car from either end or alternatively booking a taxi/minibus to take you round and then run back. Local guides Trail Running Scotland offer this route with both travel and a guide a few times a year and it's well worth taking advantage of these trips to share the experience with a group.
